BALLET ( Cecchetti Method/Exams)
Ballet is a formalized type of performance dance, which originated in the Italian Renaissance Courts of the 15th century. It was further developed in France, England, and Russia as a concert dance form. It has since become a highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary. It is a poised dance style, that incorporates the foundational techniques for many other dance styles. Ballet is the basis of dance.
Recreational students – NO Ballet class required.
Competitive students– required to take 1 Ballet class per week.

MODERN

Modern takes free natural movements while still using the technique and structure from Ballet and Jazz. This unique type of dance style creates language with the posture, core, bodyweight placement and movements. Students wishing to take this class MUST take at least one ballet class per week.

JAZZ TECHNIQUE CLASS
(Progressions/Jumps&Turns/ Ballet and jazz foundations)
All of us at Coastal Edge Dance Centre, feel, that it is very important that any dancer who is in competitive classes and/or doing a solo/duo/trio, take this class. As in most forms of dance, technique is the foundation for all dance movement. In particular, jazz dancers benefit from a sound working knowledge of both ballet & jazz technique. Our technique class will focus on:
Center control – The body’s center is the focal point from which all movement emanates, thus making it possible to maintain balance while executing powerful movements.
Spotting – This enables dancers to maintain balance and control while executing turns such as pirouettes and fouettes.
Recreational students – NO Jazz Technique class required.
Competitive students– required to attend 1 Jazz Technique Class per week.

JAZZ ( OPEN & C.D.T.A. exams)
Jazz dance is a classification shared by a broad range of dance styles. Prior to the 1950’s, jazz dance referred to dance styles that originated from African American vernacular dance. In the 1950’s a new genre of jazz dance – modern jazz-emerged with roots in Caribbean traditional dance. Every individual style of jazz dance has roots traceable to one of these two distinct origins. Jazz dance evolved over time to spawn a diverse range of social and concert dance styles. During the later jazz age, popular forms of jazz dance included the Cakewalk, Black Bottom, Charleston, Jitterbug, Boogie Woogie, Swing, and the related Lindy Hop. This Class will consist of a warm up, progressions across the floor and center, followed by a Jazz combination.
* This Style of Dance is offered to both recreational and competitive dancers from Primary to Adult.*

LYRICAL & CONTEMPORARY JAZZ
Lyrical & Contemporary Jazz is a style that combines elements of Ballet, Modern and Jazz techniques. It is commonly set to popular music with vocals or instrumental bars. The goal of the lyrical dancer is i.e. to use gestures, facial expressions and controlled movements to demonstrate flexability, fluidity and emotional connection to music. Lyrical dance typically encourages the use of articulation, line, weight placement and movement qualities.
*This style of dance is only offered to Competitive Junior, Intermediate and Senior dancers as well as Adult Workshops.*

TAP (OPEN & C.D.T.A. exams)
Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by a tapping sound that is created from metal plates that are attached to both the ball and heel of the dancer’s shoe. When these metal plates are tapped against a hard surface they create a percussive sound and as such the dancers are considered to be musicians. Tap dancers make frequent use of syncopation, improvisation and a cappella. Early tappers like Fred Astaire provided a more ballroom look to Tap dancing where as Steve Condos, a  Hoofer, would tap using more of his legs making a louder, more grounded sound. This kind of Tap dancing is called,Rhythm Tap.
* This Style of dance is offered to both recreational and Competitive dancers from Primary to Adult.*
